How to Become a Marketing Consultant

A marketing consultant is a professional that works with clients to help develop a marketing and advertising plan to better reach customers. Marketing consultants can be well-paid professionals, who are hired by either content marketing agencies or can work as freelance consultants. For those that would like to be a marketing consultant, there are several tips and steps that should be followed.


The first step in becoming a marketing consultant is to get an education in the field. Most marketing consultants have at least a bachelor’s degree in marketing, which many also have a master’s. While you are getting your education, it would be helpful to join student business or marketing groups and get summer internships to help bolster your resume.

Entry Level Job

After you have finished school, you will need to spend a few years getting experience, developing your reputation, and building a client base. It would be a good idea to get a job with a marketing firm, which will provide you with the ability to work with several different clients and work on a variety of projects.

Develop a Portfolio on the Side

While you are working as a marketing consultant, it would also help to develop a portfolio on the side. You could look for side work at other firms or work for small businesses directly. In some cases, it would also be a good idea to offer your services at a substantial discount as you will benefit greatly simply through the increased experience. As you continue to have successes with your marketing plan, be sure to get referrals and build case studies to document your success.

Become a Consultant

Once you have built more of a background and track record, you can start your consulting business. To do this, you will need to do a lot of networking with past co-workers, clients, and other industry contacts. In many cases, you will be able to find freelance consulting jobs that will help you further bolster your reputation.

Get Involved

Most importantly, you need to get involved in your industry. The marketing field has a lot of different professional organizations that are worth joining. Through these associations you can continue to learn about the industry, see briefing reports on industry changes, and meet new people.
